Hobby Corner - Metal Detecting with Kerry

Kerry recently told us about how she enjoys spending some of her free time metal detecting. Well, we thought, that would make for an interesting piece for our newsletter. So here goes…..

How did you become interested in metal detecting Kerry?

“Well I actually used to do it with my kids when they were small, but only as a way of passing time really. But I recently had a chat with a friend about his metal detecting and he showed me some of his finds. This rekindled my interest and I thought to myself ‘why not give it a go?’ So I bought myself a cheap detector and off I went. I was immediately hooked and within a couple of weeks I upgraded to a professional unit.”

What is it you enjoy about the hobby?

“I suppose it all boils down to history. How long has the item been in the ground? Who did it belong to and how did it end up here? I like the thought that I may be the first person to see a particular item for decades, or even hundreds of years. I sometimes feel that I am literally holding history in my hand.”

What is your favourite find so far?

“I think that has to be my 1937 silver shilling. But my 1906 penny runs it close.”

What would be your dream find?

“Something entirely unique. But to be honest, I don’t dream of finding a pot of gold. I get excited just finding a penny or an old bullet casing. Hearing that buzz! I’m sure that I would never sell anything I found. I also enjoy the fresh air and exercise. Although living so close to St Albans, finding something Roman would be nice!”

What do your family think of your hobby?

“My mum and brother enjoy doing it themselves now. And my husband Colin is great at digging things up. He gets as excited as me!”

Sounds fun doesn’t it? Kerry has promised to show us any exciting finds. We will keep you posted!
