Blooming Ron
We at Wilnash are privileged to have known Ron for over four years now. A very independent gentleman, Ron has fantastic support from his family, and we provide him with a little assistance each morning. Lisa and I popped over for a chat with him last Thursday morning. He told us a little about his life-long career as a florist.
Ron was born and grew up in Barnet. He remembers having two paper rounds as a schoolboy. He also remembers having to pedal up and down that hilly part of North London on his trusted push-bike.
After leaving school Ron was taken on by M.Butchers & Son at 109 High Street, Barnet. This was a florists and garden supply shop and almost immediately Ron was pedaling up and down those pesky hills again making deliveries.
In 1947 Ron was called up for his National Service and he spent much of the next two years in Egypt guarding the Suez Canal. But on his return to the UK he resumed his career at M.Butchers & Sons. Ron had managed to save a little money over the years so that when Mr Butchers retired in 1956 he was able to buy the business. He also bought the name and was referred to as ‘Mr Butcher’ by some customers for many years! By the time Ron took over the business he had married his sweetheart Joy so he was now a man with responsibilities.
Ron spent many decades serving the local community and for the most part thoroughly enjoyed it. He spent his whole working like at 109 High Street Barnet. Quite an achievement! He retired several years ago now and is enjoying the free time to do as he likes. Ron particularly enjoys reading and there is a big pile of books besides his armchair.
Lisa and I thoroughly enjoyed our chat with Ron. He is an engaging chap and much loved by all at Wilnash Care. Good luck with that big pile of books Ron!
